Why do follow?
Google gives a quick ‘driveby’ regarding the use of the do follow vs. no follow attribute here: About rel=”nofollow”

So, if you are trying to get your page to rank in search engines (and google is NOT the only one, although they like to think so) – you will want to post to sites that have an active “do follow” attribute. By maintaining a “no follow” attirbute on your own blog, you are saying – “I want the benefit of your do follow but I refuse to return the favor.
Controlling spam is not the problem that it used to be…
You can:
- install the akismet plugin on WordPress blogs
- close comments at any time on any post
- and/or set your comment parameters (in any of the blog platforms) to require:
- 1. a certain number of approved posts before a commenter is allowed to post without being moderated
- 2. moderation of every comment on your blog
- 3. under what conditions a person can comment from the onset by selecting: google account, livejournal, wordpress, typepad, AIM, OpenID, Name/Url or anonymous
- 4. turning off posts for comments once a post is a certain number of days from publish date
The fact is that spammers might post and re-post to your site once they find you if you don’t set some restrictions in place – but they may never find you at all.
If they do find you, they will post on old posts, hoping you never see it. The first thing a spammer looks for is an outdated post that you might not be moderating. Once they find one, it’s open season.
My blogs all have the do follow attribute.
I also allow people to post with any of the available options. I post with anchor text because that is the best way to get backlink and keyphrase recognition. So, I want to post as Name/URL – you might prefer to not let that happen. It’s all about your comfort level.
My blogs require moderation on comments to posts over 30 or 45 days old (depending on the particular blog).
The fact is, to optimize your page or blog, you need quality backlinks.
It’s a bit selfish to gain backlinks and not give any back – don’t you think?
You can manage a do follow blog – don’t let anyone tell you differently.
