For example: keyphrase right here is highlighted or underlined on this page (depending upon your browser settings) – it is a clickable link – search engines see this as ANCHOR TEXT. When you click on it, you will be taken to an earlier post on this blog.

This tells the search engines that the words you have chosen as the link words are valuable and associated to the page that will open when clicked.

However, if you want to really make the search engines like you – you should link outside of your own site – to another authoritative site. This lets google, bing, yahoo and other search engines know that you are not just writing to please them, but that you are providing value and content to the web at-large.

After all, no website is an island. You did know that. Right?

The trick here is to use words that go along with the page. If you link the words “dog trainer” as anchor text to a page that has an irrelevant short story (even if the story is a great story) – then search engines are going to downgrade your anchor text because nothing on the page is relevant to “dog trainer.”

The trick here is to be consistent with your anchor text – in order to rank for a keyword or keyphrase in search engine results – you should select your anchor text wisely. In most cases it should be the same primary keyword or keyphrase you have chosen. This will give you the biggest bang for your buck in search engines.

To accomplish anchor text in a web page is pretty straightforward – just highlight the words you want as the anchor text and use the “LINK” button on your page – a small dialog box will open and all you need to do is add the URL you want your readers to jump to when they click.

The special use of anchor text extends beyond your blog though. You need inbound links that use your anchor text to really get some search engine juice to your site.

There are several ways to accomplish this:

Post on blogs using your anchor text as your name and your webpage as the URL – see the next image as an example.

Here is a place to look for dofollow blogs – but do your homework, just because they are on this list does not mean they are truly dofollow.

Post on forums using the same technique – your anchor text is your name – and you place a link to your website in the signature block. Here is a starting place to search out valuable dofollow forums. Be sure to read their Terms of Service and FAQs.

If you can identify a half dozen dofollow blogs and a half dozen dofollow forums in your niche that you can link to, you will be doing very well. Just don’t spam – don’t post generic no value comments to get your link – read their blogs – interact on the forums in meaningful ways. If you don’t, your comments might not be posted and there is the possibility that you could be banned from a forum altogether.

In order to gain valuable links – you need to add value to the site. It is a give-and-take, ying/yang kinda thing.
